Luis AlfonsoEvans Announces 2010 Driver Safety Grand Prize Recipient

Over his sixteen years and millions of miles on the road driving almost every kind of truck, Carroll Connor has had exactly zero violations. Now between trips for Evans Delivery, he’ll be racking up the perfect miles on just two wheels, having won a 2010 Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide in Evans’ annual safest driver drawing.

“The announcement, made by Evans Vice President Kim Lorimer, highlights Evans’ efforts to encourage and show appreciation for safety conscious operators. And, those efforts are paying off. “We have been fortunate in attracting and keeping the better, safer, caliber of professional driver at Evans” points out Ms. Lorimer. “In fact, given the overall safety record of our drivers it would be difficult to choose just one winner by anything other than a drawing.”

“Eligibility for the drawing requires Evans drivers to have had no accidents or incidents in a calendar year, as well as stringently following government rules and regulations and keeping proper documentation. While the Harley drawing is an annual event, Evans keeps the focus on safety with a range of monthly drawings of a variety of other prizes. Needless to say Mr. Connor has been eligible for those drawings as well, and over the three years he’s been with Evans has won more than once. Bill Ashley, Evans’ Agent and Terminal Manager in Wilmington, NC commented that he was “proud to see Carroll win the Harley. He’s one of our original drivers, always on time, always does the best job possible. Evans puts great stock in the quality of its drivers, and Carroll is the perfect example.”

“Mr. Connor credits his safe record to liking what he does for a living, “following the rules and watching out for the other person” and makes it plain that safety on the road includes concern for the other drivers. A 40-year resident of Lumberton, he’s raising three children, Josh, 15, Miranda, 8, and Christopher,7, and says the new Harley has been quite an exciting addition to the household. “Everyone likes to ride with me.” His only concern is for his oldest, Josh, “He’s got his eye on it, but he’s not leaving the garage until I say he’s ready. Maybe in a couple years.”

Evans Goes Green

The Evans Network of Companies took a major step in its commitment to environmental excellence with the company’s voluntary inclusion in Virginia Port Authority’s (VPA) “Green Operators” (GO) pilot program aimed at truckers engaged in port drayage.  Evans Network is one of the first to be a part of VPA’s GO program, which arranges low-cost financing to retrofit exhaust filters providing vehicles with more emission-efficient engines.

“Evans Network plans to retrofit its independent contractors’ trucks serving the Ports of Virginia with diesel particulate filters that have been shown to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 percent,” said Mr. Albert “Bert” Evans, Jr., President and CEO of Evans Network. Century Express and Evans Delivery Company are the local affiliates of Evans Network serving the Ports of Virginia.

The GO program is the first voluntary retrofit program at a U.S. port. Evans Network will share expenses for retrofitting its fleet with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality via the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Clean Diesel Program.

“We’re excited that Evans Network was one of the first to take advantage of our GO program,” said Heather Mantz, VPA’s environmental director. “Evans Network is a leader in the transportation industry and we hope others will be follow their example and become ‘Green Operators’,” Ms. Mantz continued.

In addition to the GO program, Evans Network has retrofitted a portion of its fleet with Espar cab heaters to minimize engine idling, increased the use of IdleAire Technologies at truck stops and installed eco-flaps to reduce drag as part of its ongoing green initiatives.

“We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint nationwide and we are proud to join VPA in its innovative environmental project,” said Mr. Evans.
